School Programs


The Muskoka Lakes Museum is proud to offer a series of school programs for the 2008 school year. Programs will be available at the museum from the beginning of May, 2008, as well as in September and October, 2008. The Museum is also partnering with the library in Port Carling to offer programming on each PA day throughout the 2007-2008 school year.
 


Herbs & Flowers:
(appropriate for K-3)

Through a series of hands-on activities, students learn how pioneers treated common ailments with herbs, and the continuing use of herbs today. Each student will bring home a planted herb seed and a pioneer bath bag. Also included in this program are in-class, grade-specific activities for the teacher to implement after the field trip to meet further curriculum expectations.

This program meets expectations from the following subjects:

•  Kindergarten - The Arts, Language, Mathematics, Personal & Social Development, and Science & Technology
•  Grades 1, 2 and 3 - The Arts, Health & Physical Education, Science & Technology, and Social Studies

Cemetery Exploration & Community Studies:
(appropriate for grades 5-8)

Students explore a Port Carling cemetery to learn about the history, culture, and beliefs of people who lived in this community in previous generations. Through active investigation and group discussions, they draw conclusions about the lifestyles of the people buried in the cemetery and are given the opportunity to defend their point of view. Each student will complete a gravestone rubbing and the teacher will receive two activity sheets to complete in-class to meet further curriculum expectations. Please note that this program runs rain or shine!

This program meets expectations from the following subjects:

•  Grade 5 - The Arts and Mathematics
•  Grade 6 - The Arts, Mathematics, and Social Studies
•  Grades 7 and 8 - The Arts, History, and Mathematics

Pioneer Life:
(appropriate for K-3)

Students experience the lifestyle of a Muskokan pioneer child through taking part in some chores and activities common in that era. In addition to playing pioneer games and using the apple press to make fresh juice, the teacher selects an additional activity for the class from the following list: ice cream making, pioneer use of herbs, butter churning, candle making, bannock (yeast-free bread) baking, or making apple sauce.

This program meets expectations from the following subjects:

•  Kindergarten - Language, Personal & Social Development, and The Arts
•  Grades 1 and 2 - Health & Physical Education, Language, and Social Studies
•  Grade 3 - Health & Physical Education, Language, Science & Technology, Social Studies



Pioneer Life:
(appropriate for grades 4-6)

In addition to butter churning and building a pioneer toy, the teacher selects an additional activity for the class from the following list: ice cream making, making apple sauce, pioneer use of herbs, candle-making, pioneer games, bannock (yeast-free bread) baking, or making apple juice using the apple press.

This program meets expectations from the following subjects:

•  Grade 4 - The Arts and Science
•  Grades 5 and 6 - The Arts


Community Growth & The Influences of the Natural Environment:
(appropriate for grades 4-8)
:

This program uses Port Carling as a case study to show how the natural environment influences not only what industries will locate successfully within a community, but also where in that community they will establish. We will examine ways in which the natural environment may contribute to the relative success or failure of a community. A walking tour of Port Carling and a large group activity are included in this program.

This program meets expectations from the following subjects:

•  Grades 4 and 5 - Science
•  Grade 6 - Science & Social Studies
•  Grade 7 - Geography, History, and Science
•  Grade 8 - History and Science



All of the above programs also include a guided tour of the museum and relevant artifacts, and are 1½ to 2 hours in length. The cost per program is $30 plus $2/child. We can accommodate a maximum of 60 children due to space and staffing restrictions.
