Welcome to the Muskoka Lakes Museum

Come join us as we explore the eventful past at the Muskoka Lakes Museum. Representing the history of the Muskoka Lakes Township, the museum is an important cultural, historical and educational resource, serving the community and its many visitors. The area's heritage is presented through permanent and seasonal exhibits and programs, workshops, and special events.

Summer jobs at the Museum! Interested in gaining some experience working at a museum this summer? We are looking to fill 3 positions -- Educational Programming assistant, Collections Management assistant and Exhibit Coordinator assistant.

The 2008 season is shaping up, with a full and exciting line-up of events, exhibits and programs. Our annual HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATION will take place on Monday, May 12th, at the Port Carling Community Centre, starting at 6pm with a potluck dinner. Paul Dodington is speaking at 7pm on the history of recorded sound.

Our annual Plant Sale returns on Opening Day, Saturday, May 17th, (Victoria Day weekend) from 10am to 2pm. Native and heritage specimens are featured, and local gardening experts are on site during the sale.

The Muskoka Lakes Museum is once again participating in the DOORS OPEN MUSKOKA event on Saturday, June 14th, from 10am to 4pm. DOORS OPEN provides free, self-guided and guided tours of the area’s twenty most interesting heritage sites, including the Muskoka Lakes Museum Hall family log cabin. Maps and information can be obtained at the museum.

The Catto Gallery has a new show each month, featuring many local artists. A new temporary exhibit is also displayed each month in the front foyer. Each art show and temporary exhibit will include an opening reception with a speaker this season -- watch our events calendar for details.

Walking Tours of Port Carling are available every Thursday at 1:30pm in July & August. Cost is $7.50 per person. The Museum's popular Children's Programs for 5 -9 year-olds take place every Wednesday and Thursday from July 2nd - August 21st

The Museum's Annual General Meeting takes place on Saturday, July 19th at 1:30pm. This is followed by an invitation only Wine & Cheese reception. Back by popular demand is our Artifact or Fiction fundraiser, taking place at the new Oviinbyrd Golf Club on Tuesday, July 29th, from 4:30pm to 7pm. Participants can test their knowledge of Canadiana while enjoying delectable hors d'oeuvres and beverages in elegant surroundings.

Our annual Thanksgiving Celebration Open House is happening on Saturday, Oct. 11th. Join us for free pumpkin muffins and pioneer demonstrations as we ‘wrap-up’ the season. We are also open Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1, and Civic Holiday Monday, August 4, 2008

Snow Snakes at WinterFest - The Snow Snakes event at Port Carling's Winterfest was a fun time for all participants! Mayor Susan Pryke won the Ladies throwing contest. As reigning champion she is ready to defend her title against all challengers next winter.
