Conductor

Alana Hall

Our new director is a talented musician with a wide range of experience.  She has returned to Muskoka to share her joy of music that  she first discovered here.

Alana was born and raised in Bracebridge where her interest in music blossomed at  an early age.  Her first chance to display her interest was playing in the Bracebridge Salvation Army Band, followed by participation in a variety of bands and ensembles at Bracebridge P.S. and BMLSS such as the BPS Marching Band, the BMLSS Brass Ensemble, the BMLSS Concert Band, the BMLSS Stage Band and, most famously, the Dixieland Band.

Her talent and interest took her on to  study music performance at Cambrian College in Sudbury.  There she was a member of the College Choir, played trumpet in the local Brass Choir and the Sudbury Youth Orchestra, and was principle trumpet for the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.

Subsequent to this she moved on to Wilfrid Laurier University where she studied comprehensive music with a concentration in Music Education. To expand her musical horizons, she took two Choral Conducting courses.  Once again she played in a variety of groups including the Laurier Symphony Orchestra and several wind ensembles.

After completing Teacher’s College at Nipissing University, Alana entered the teaching profession back home in Muskoka. For 2 years she worked as an Itinerant Music Teacher, traveling between three public schools in Huntsville. She is currently teaching a grade 6/7 class at Huntsville Public School and has special responsibility for the Intermediate Music Program there.

Alana has bravely taken on the challenge of being the Music Director of the Muskoka Men of Song and we are very pleased to have her with us.

Accompanist

 Katherine Belisle

Katherine comes from a military family, and has  lived in various areas throughout the province and overseas.  She began studying piano at a young age and then completed her training through the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

Prior to entering her full-time career as a registered nurse, she taught piano and provide occasional musical support to various church services in the Barrie area. She moved to Toronto to further pursue her nursing career and met her husband, Robert Belisle, there.

The Belisles began cottaging in the Muskoka area in 1995 and by June of 2000, decided they would like to settle in this beautiful region. Both Katherine and Robert found new employment opportunities in the Muskoka area and moved to Muskoka full-time from Toronto. They now reside in Port Carling.

We are pleased that Katherine has undertaken the challenging task of providing accompaniment for the Men of Song this season.

History of the Men of Song

The Muskoka Men of Song is a choral group centred in southern Muskoka in Ontario's popular tourist region. It traces the idea for its establishment to a small music study/appreciation group composed of a local physician, two teachers, and a business administrator. It was mentored by the Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School music teacher, John Rutherford. Someone suggested singing music instead of simply "appreciating" it. That was in 1984. The idea quickly found other people of like mind in the community and when the first meeting was called, a dozen or so men from various trades, businesses, and professions showed up to sing. John Rutherford became the leader/conductor.

For the first 14 years the group met weekly on Sunday evenings in the Rutherfords' living room crowded around the piano. The music was varied. Its style was essentially "glee club" with short pieces from popular, folk, classical and semi-classical genres performed at first for the enjoyment of the members but increasingly for audiences. The Men of Song performed in schools, at church, in community concerts, and war memorial reviews such as "Down Memory Lane". They could appear as the main feature but just as often supported or were supported by other musical groups and individuals. Senior citizen residences provided a good source of audiences and semi-formal concerts were held there permitting the men to practice and entertain at the same time. Their repertoire eventually became two-parted, secular and religious. The group increased in numbers over the years to an average size of about 25 active members at any given time, but with a significantly larger membership list. This larger pool allowed the participants to absent themselves from time to time without seriously impairing the performance quality of the group.

The Muskoka Men of Song chorus has had various accompanists over the years. Of longest service are John Reynolds and Lois Cavey of Bracebridge.

In 1994, John Rutherford turned over leadership of the group to Rob Knighton, then music teacher of Bracebridge Public School, and practices were alternated between Bracebridge and Gravenhurst. The music has retained its glee club secular and religious style. Some performances have become annual events, such as the annual concert at the Gravenhurst Opera House, Bala's "Trek to Bethlehem" during the Christmas season and upon invitations to specific churches in the spring and early summer.

The Muskoka Men of Song is not an exclusive group but an open fellowship. New members are always welcome. A personal joy in learning and performing choral music are the main prerequisites.
