Huntsville

Muskoka's northern town, Huntsville is a four season vacationland full of excitement and recreational opportunities. Originally a logging town started in the mid-1800's by Capt. George Hunt, its natural beauty was soon attracting tourists. Some of the area's fine resorts had their beginnings back when rail and steam were the only means of transport into the area.

Now many of these same resorts, complete with the latest in facilities and services, cater to visitors from all over the world. Downhill and cross-country skiing, superb snowmobiling, first class golf, and spectacular night life with comedy revues and Vegas -style shows are just a sampling of the activities listed in their itineraries.

Recreational and wilderness camping is available at nearby Arrowhead Provincial Park and world-famous Algonquin Provincial Park. Fabulous boating is possible on the area's four large lakes, linked by Huntsville's recently-renovated Brunel locks. The rolling countryside makes for challenging mountain biking. The town itself holds a great variety of special events throughout the year. Mid July is the time for the annual Bathtub Derby on Fairy lake -- just for the fun of it! And in August it's the Swing Bridge Regatta. Muskoka Pioneer Village, a turn-of-the-century living museum, puts on special events all year long, including an old-fashioned Strawberry Social, a Pioneer Children's Week, Market Day, the Great Pumpkin Trail at Halloween, and a Victorian Christmas. From the Village take an historic tour of the town, using public transit. Almost 40 of Huntsville's historic buildings are highlighted and a brochure is available.

Lion's Lookout, located on a hill near the downtown is a scenic spot providing a panoramic view of Huntsville's Fairy Lake and the surrounding area. It's especially spectacular in the peak of the fall colours!

Huntsville boasts the biggest diversity of shopping in the district. It's downtown is extensive, with all manner of shops and businesses and places to eat, plus a wide variety of accommodations.

Whatever the season, there's always something on in Huntsville!
