LOCAL EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS

Starting with the Kaleidoscope Children’s Music and Art Camp during its first week, the Festival continues with a great variety of music, from country to classical, running from July 9th to August 9th.

The Muskoka Lakes Music Festival is once again offering a ‘stellar’ lineup of talent from July 9th to August 9th in Port Carling.

Starting with the Kaleidoscope Children’s Music and Art Camp during its first week, (the Children’s camp returns again the week of July 23rd) the Festival continues with a great variety of music, from country to classical.

On Monday July 16th Ian Thomas, of Painted Ladies fame, takes the stage at the Community Centre in Port Carling at 8pm. A Juno award winner, (with many Juno nominations, too) three SOCAN classic awards, a UNICEF Danny Kaye Humanitarian award, 15 albums and as many top twenty records Ian Thomas is a successful song writer and recording artist. His lyrics, “have been utilized in English textbooks, while his songwriting has found success with many international artists such as Santana, America, Manfred Mann, Chicago, Bette Midler and Ann Murray, to name but a few.”

On Thursday, July 19th Fred Eaglesmith brings their blend of ‘hard-edged honky-tonk, a balance between rock and early sixties country music’ to Port. Described as, “passionate, funny and sentimental all at once, as if Hank Williams joined The Rolling Stones,” the group plays, ‘roadhouses, honky-tonks, old churches and high-ticket soft seat theaters. They have no record rep; just five men between the ages of 26 and 51.’

The next Thursday sees the Bebop Cowboys visit. Known as ‘Canada's premier western swing outfit,’ they have been compared to legendary western swing groups such as Jimmy Dickens and his Country Boys, and Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadors.

‘Jack Hutton and Friends’ grace the stage the following Thursday, August 2nd. “One of the best known ragtime pianists in Canada,” Jack Hutton “delights in bringing together a group of talented musical buddies once a year to re-create the happy sounds of the 1920s and 1930s.”

Jennifer Tung, “active as a vocal coach/ accompanist with some of Toronto’s leading vocalists,” is no stranger to the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival. She will be joined by Eileen Keown, “a dynamic and energetic individual with a wide range of experience in the music profession,” on August 9th.

The Festival’s final season performance is by The Toronto Consort. “Canada’s leading chamber ensemble, specializing in the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Consort presents an annual series of concerts in Toronto, and performs throughout Canada, the United States, Great Britain and Europe. The Toronto Consort has also recorded music for film, most recently the sound track for Academy Award-nominated The Sweet Hereafter directed by Atom Egoyan.”

All events are held at the Port Carling Memorial Community Centre, 3 Bailey St., Port Carling, unless stated otherwise. The Centre is air conditioned, wheel chair accessible, and has lots of free parking.
