Bracebridge

A picturesque town in the centre of Muskoka, Bracebridge sits on a hill overlooking a roaring waterfalls and both branches of the Muskoka River. It's the seat of Regional government and several district agencies -- a vital town alive with activities and events to suit every interest.

The bustling Main Street rises uphill in tiers of shops, offices and restaurants, many with period fronts. At night the town's clock, bell towers, bridge and the courthouse are outlined with unique, colourful braided lighting -- a special sight. Anchoring this downtown core, at the top of the falls, is the newly renovated Bird's Mill. The last remaining building of the substantial woollen mill built by entrepreneur Henry Bird, and is now home to the Town's Chamber of Commerce Office and a variety of shops.

Bird's impressive home, Woodchester Villa, is set on a hill opposite the falls. An intriguing restored historic house, it features a `dumb waiter', a fenced widow's walk and an unusual octagonal shape. Next door is the Chapel Art Gallery, a showcase for local arts and crafts.

It was the falls, and the readily available power which they provide, that brought about the Town's development. Bracebridge was the first municipality in the province to own its own hydro-electric station -- in 1894. The present power plant at the foot of the falls is the oldest power plant in Canada in continuous use. Follow the illustrated markers around Bracebridge Bay Park for a glimpse of the Town's rich history.

Bracebridge Bay Park at the base of the falls include tennis courts and a playground and is an idyllic setting for picnicking and swimming. Sit and watch the `scullers' of the Bracebridge Rowing Club as they practice on the river. Canada Day sees a spectacular fireworks display with the falls as a backdrop, and just downriver is the dock of the Lady Muskoka, a 200 passenger cruise ship that tours the river and Lake Muskoka daily all summer.

In winter the river boasts a one-of-a-kind snowmobile bridge built to accommodate the flood of recreational `ski-doers'. Cross country skiers will thrill to the numerous trails available.

Bracebridge's most famous attraction is Santa's Village. Ol' St. Nick has been summering in Bracebridge for 49 years now, and has a great playground for kids of all ages. Ride the Ferris wheel, Roller Coaster, or the paddle wheel Rive r Boat. For teens Mister Rudolph's Funland has Go-Karts, Batting Cages, Mini-golf, Roller Blading, and a state-of-the-art Activity Centre.
