Many species of trout found in Muskoka

When people are talking about fishing and fish the topic of trout is sure to be raised. These beautiful, fresh-water gems require a good deal of skill and expertise to catch, but they are well worth the effort, giving a great fight. Trout are also one of the best eating, fresh-water fishes in the world.

While not famous for trout fishing, Muskoka does have a few places where rainbow, brook, brown and lake trout can be fished. And several restaurants in the region serve trout of various kinds.

Talking with fisheries biologist Bob Bergmann of the Ministry of Natural Resources in Bracebridge he mentions a few places where trout have been stocked.

“All of the big lakes – Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, Lake Joseph and Lake of Bays – have been stocked with Lake Trout,” he says, adding, “a number of the small lakes have both naturally occurring Lake and Brook Trout. In the past we have also stocked Beaver Creek and the North branch of the Muskoka River with Brown Trout.”

If you want to sample a plate of delicious trout, (rainbow or otherwise) check the menus of any of these restaurants in Muskoka for this delectable dish.

The Holiday Inn near Milford Bay on 118 West serves local Rainbow Trout in their Milford Bay Trout salad, and as part of their Grand Buffet menu.

The Apollo Restaurant, at the corner of Manitoba Street and Monck Road in Bracebridge, has Fresh Rainbow Trout on their menu, complete with soup du jour or salad, rice and fresh veggies.

The Inn at Christie’s Mill, located in Port Severn, offers a Grilled Lake Trout dish, served alongside regionally grown fruits and vegetables.

The Norsemen Restaurant on Limberlost Road north of Huntsville, features a game-oriented menu that includes Fresh Rainbow Trout, pan-fried and served with herb lemon butter, potatoes and vegetables.

You can also buy your own local trout at several locations, including Fresh Kutz Market and Grill on Wellington Street in Bracebridge, Hermann’s Delicatessen on Manitoba Street in Bracebridge, the local farmer’s markets, and directly from Milford Bay Trout Farm.

Located just off the 118 West near Milford Bay, (look for the signs along the highway) the Milford Bay Trout Farm sells both fresh and smoked rainbow trout, as well as providing opportunities to fish for your own in their trout stream and pond.
