The Stone Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Port Sydney has a lot
going for it. Built of solid granite slabs in a traditional
country style farmhouse, it is situated on 32 acres of pine
forest along the North Muskoka River in the heart of Muskoka.
There are nature trails on the property for hiking, 1,000 feet
of river access for swimming and canoeing, and their own
private dock for fishing. Or bring your clubs and try some
fun golf on their own 9 hole, Scottish-links style golf
course, right on the property.
Completely
restored, the Stone Cottage is decorated with Canadiana and
antiques. Enjoy the charm of the cannonball bed, the antique
dressing table and the double-window view of the side garden and pine forest in the Homestead
Room. The Blue Room features a queen sized, white brass bed,
while the Rose Room has a double bed, and includes
Mennonite-made quilts. All share the common bathroom.
For added comfort the house is completely air-conditioned. A
friendly dog and two cats are in residence.
Owners Joanne and Bill
Chalmers went to great lengths to preserve the style of the
Stone Cottage when they added the sunroom. An expansive 27
by 20 with stone walls and an 11 cedar, it is a
favourite retreat for cards and games, and earned the Chalmers
an Heritage Award from the Muskoka Heritage Foundation.
Their wholesome and healthy
breakfasts include Cheese Blintzes with blueberry sauce, or
other fruit in season, topped with homemade yogurt and granola
to taste, and served along with homemade muffins and biscotti,
and coffee, tea or juice. Savour such delectable treats from
the dining room while taking in wonderful view of the grounds,
and planning your day of golf or hiking or just relaxing.
No wonder it has been
mentioned in the past four editions of The Best Places to
Bed & Breakfast in Ontario.
If you are feeling
ambitious the delightful village of Port Sydney nearby also
has lots to offer. Walk to the falls and the local general
store, or down to the beach at Mary Lake. Probably one of the
most picturesque beaches in Muskoka, it is great for boating,
sunbathing and swimming all summer long. For the history buff
the Muskoka Heritage Place in nearby Huntsville is a must,
offering a completely restored late-19th century
village as well as the Portage Flyer steam train experience.
Arrowhead and Algonquin
provincial parks are both less than an hours drive, and offer
still more hiking and nature experiences. In the winter there
is a cross-country skiing at the same parks, as well as
snowshoeing. Downhill skiing is not far away either. Try www.bbmuskoka.com/stonecottage/home.html
