If
it’s in print and has subject matter relating to cottage
country, chances are Scott’s
of Muskoka has it in stock.
Located
at 30 Manitoba Street in downtown Bracebridge, Scott’s has
been home to the largest selection of Muskoka-related books anywhere for 30 years.
“As
well as regular best-sellers and titles, we’ve usually got
more than 40 Muskoka titles in stock at any given time,”
says Jim Dwyer who, along with wife Lori, has owned the
store for the past five years. “Most titles sell well, but
the probably our best-seller – and probably the first true
Muskokan book – is Muskoka
by John de Visser and Judy Ross.”
Other
Muskokan best-sellers include Shelter
at the Shore by the same authors, and just about
anything by Susan Pryke, a long-time resident and author
who’s now kept busy as Mayor of Muskoka Lakes Township.
But
there’s more to Scott’s of Muskoka than books. The store
has over the years become a gathering place for the works of
some of Canada’s top artists.
“The
store, ironically enough, started off as a place to buy
paint and wallpaper,” says Dwyer. “Somewhere along the
line the sale of artwork crept in, followed by books. And
there’s been some pretty good talent on display here. Back
in the early days the works of famous Canadian artist Robert
Everett were shown here – in fact, we’ve still got some
of his stuff on display.”
Continuing
the art tradition is important to the Dwyers, who have
established a full season of artistic talent to be displayed
at the Scott’s Gallery. Fall shows include the work of oil
painter Michael Roth and watercolour artist Marion
Stephenson (Sept. 13 – Sept. 28), and oil paintings by Mel
Delija (Sept. 28 – Oct. 20). Visitors to the store can
meet the artists on Saturday Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Just
about everything we sell has some connection to Muskoka,”
says Dwyer. “Whether it’s books, maps, gifts or artwork,
if it’s got a Muskoka theme to it you’ll likely find it
here.”
