The Village of Rosseau

Located at the northern tip of Lake Rosseau along highway 141, the Village of Rosseau is an inviting little burg, full of charming boutique shops and eateries. Take an afternoon to poke about the Village's main street. Check out the surprising variety at the Craft Room, browse for that perfect Christmas decoration at A Village Christmas shop, grab a bite at the Tim Horton's or linger over lunch at the Helmsley Cafe and Tea Room.
Dating back to the 1870's when W.H. Pratt built a luxury wilderness resort, the Rosseau House, the village boasts a rich history. Once the Rosseau House Resort was built other properties quickly grew up nearby including a second resort, the Monteith House, and the original Ditchburn Boatworks. Soon Helmsley, the settlement's original name, was
born.
In 1906 Henry Ditchburn sold his property to Sir John and Lady Eaton who built the summer estate "Kawandag" there. In 1926 the village was incorporated and chose the name Rosseau, which the local people had called it for some years.
Though the hotels are long gone, lost to fire, several of the early buildings including the General Store, the Village Market (now the Rockytop Trading Post), and some of the homes are still in use today. Fire also
claimed most of the Eaton Estate over the years, though the property is now home to Rosseau Lake College.
Today's Residents of Rosseau are rekindling the exuberance of the early pioneers and the village is experiencing an influx of new businesses and people, and promises to have an exciting future. For more information call the General Store at (705) 732-4479.
