Riverside Inn a welcome retreat for winter enthusiasts by Kim Kerr

There are, without doubt, two very distinct Muskokas. There's the summertime Muskoka, a haven for cottagers and visitors in search of that rugged beauty that makes the region so popular. For them, the seemingly endless sunny days, the peace and tranquility, are what makes Muskoka so special.

Then there's that other Muskoka, when winter closes in and the landscape, although breathtaking in its beauty, can seem a lot less friendly -- unless, of course, you' re one of that ever-growing group who actually prefer Muskoka after the white stuff falls.

If you’ve never experienced the wonderland that Muskoka becomes each winter, you’re missing out on a truly magnificent experience. Rather than becoming less accessible, the arrival of snow opens up vast new areas of the region to explore… whether by cross-country ski, snowmobile, or even dogsled.

Far from closing for the season, many businesses flourish during the winter months, not least of all the regions’ many resorts, inns and hotels.

One Bracebridge business that has done a particularly good job of adapting to the changing seasons is the Muskoka Riverside Inn, located in Bracebridge on the banks of the Muskoka River.

During the summer months, the Riverside Inn -- situated minutes from the downtown core -- is perhaps best known as the docking place for the Lady Muskoka cruise ship. But in winter, it’s a bustling stopover for countless snowmobilers travelling the region’s many finely groomed trails.

“The Muskoka Riverside Inn has always been a popular stopover for snowmobilers,” says manager Don McGillis. “There are trails right across the road from us -- we can supply guests with trail maps if they need them.”

“We get snowmobilers stopping for the night as well as some who stay longer, using the Inn as a base for day trips. We get a lot of traffic from the States, too. They love the quality of the trails up here.”

McGillis says that many bookings come from snowmobile clubs as far afield as Milton, Kitchener, and the U.S. “The Americans don’t invest in trail grooming equipment the way we do – the quality of our trails is an important reason why they keep coming back.”

The Inn even provides secure lockups for snowmobiles, and trail permits are also available for purchase.

The 54-room Muskoka Riverside Inn also boasts the following features:

Pool and Fitness Centre

Fine Dining

Convention facilities

Sports Lounge

Teletheatre

Bowling Alley

The Muskoka Riverside Inn is located at 300 Ecclestone Dr., Bracebridge, Ont. P1L 1G5. For further information or reservations, telephone 1-800-461-4474, or 705-645-8775. Alternatively, visit their website at www.muskoka.com/tourism/rvrside/
