Smith has scored a hole in one with his new consulting
company, Persimmon Golf Inc. Recognizing the need for owners
to have someone coordinate the complexity of a golf course
development, Smith formed the company to manage golf course
construction projects.
With Smith as the
president and a managing partner, and a group of leading
golf course design and construction professionals as
consultants, Persimmon Golf provides owners and developers
with a single resource capable of managing a development
from start to finish.
The Wildfire project in
the Kawarthas is an example. “Persimmon Golf was brought
in to advise on the purchase of the land, (which is
presently being cleared) and we are now negotiating all of
the major contracts,” states Smith. “We’ll see the
project through the important ‘grow-in’ stage –
establishing the turf and root system – and be there right
up to when the first ball is hit,” says Smith.
“The
owners and developers are successful business people in
other areas, but use our expertise to prepare a checklist,
put the pieces of the puzzle together and basically direct
them through the process,” Smith explains.
From
the start just 2 years ago Persimmon Golf has been busy.
They assisted in the Project Management for the new Bigwin
Island golf course, opened just last summer, were involved
with the Copper Creek Golf Club in Kleinburg, due to open
this coming summer, and are currently Construction Managing
the new championship Taboo course at the Muskoka. Sands
Resort in Gravenhurst. An 18-hole championship, 7100-yard par 72-course, it features fairways
laid out on the beautiful Canadian Shield landscape of
Muskoka. Highlights
include spectacular granite outcroppings, natural wetlands,
picturesque waterfalls and pristine creeks and ponds. Along
with a state-of-the-art practice facility, the course is
also scheduled to open this summer.
Persimmon Golf provides construction and
contract management services for all aspects of the golf
course, which includes administering all the major
contracts. These
contracts include clearing, earthmoving, finishing and
feature construction, the irrigation system, pumping
stations and the maintenance facility.
Further
afield, Persimmon is involved with projects in eastern
Canada, is doing some consulting in the U.S., and is even
working on a project in Finland. “We are also hired as
consultants for lending institutions, to oversee a major
expansion or renovation of an existing golf club,”
explains Smith.
