Game-oriented menu at The Norsemen Restaurant on Walker Lake

by Doug Smith

Enno Kerckhoff, owner of the Norsemen Restaurant, recalls a recent guest telling of how he learned about the restaurant. "The fellow was leaving his home in San Francisco, rushing to catch a cab to the airport when a friend calls to him from across the street, asking him where he was going. He yells back, "Canada." "But where?" his friend calls back. "Ontario, north of Toronto, near Huntsville," came the answer. "The Norsemen, go to the Norsemen Restaurant," his friends calls over.

L ocated north of Huntsville, at the edge of Walker Lake on Lim berlost Road the Norsemen Restaurant has earned a superior reputation. Rave reviews in such recognized publications as 'Where to Eat in Canada', the Thomas Cook Guide to Canada, and Fodor's Guide to Canada, among others, all tell of the Norsemen's many glowing attributes.

"We have a more game oriented menu," states Enno, mentioning such items as smoked Elk, grilled Emu, roast Muscovy Duck and baked Pheasant. The rest of the menu is equally inviting. Choose from rack of lamb, pork or beef tenderloin, grilled chicken, and a nice selection of seafoods, such as baked Atlantic Salmon and a Sauté of shrimp and scallops.

Appetizers include escargot, sushi or warmed goat's cheese on flat bread with a sundried tomato coulis, sweet peppers and artichoke antipasto. If you are vegetarian try the wild rice and polenta with lentils, spinach and tomato. And for dessert there are such mouth watering treats as Berry Feuilletage, (fresh berries with vanilla custard, served on pastry with fruit coulis), the Norsemen's Profiterole -- a cream puff shell with ice cream, chocolate sauce and fruit compote -- and their own white chocolate cheesecake.

All these are superbly prepared by their highly trained chef, whose experience includes a time at the Ben Miller House, Banff Springs, and Windermere House.

Enno, along with his wife and co-owner Lynda, manage both the restaurant and the modest cottage resort situated along the Walker Lake shoreline. Drawing from his years of experience organizing conventions with Prudential Life Insurance, Enno takes care of the extensive wine list, personally picking a full range of premium quality reds, whites, and sparkling wines and champagnes from all over the world.

"I want people to have such a good time that they will want to bring their friends back here," Enno concludes.
