Fall
is a great time for a ramble in the country. Take a drive to see
the leaves changing colour, to go somewhere for a hike, or to
visit a farm.
The
Nichols' farm at the edge of Bracebridge is open to the public 5
days a week until the end of October. A great place to take the
kids, a visit to the Nichols' Farm in the fall is
something of a local tradition in Muskoka.
The
variety of animals is just one of the reasons the kids enjoy it
so much. Nichols' farm is home to everything from rabbits and
turkeys, to goats and their kids, sheep and their lambs, to a
pot-bellied pig, a 4-horned sheep, a calf and a pony, of course.
The children are able to interact with the animals in a
contained pen, set-up like a petting zoo. Rubber boots are a
good idea for this activity.
If
you can pull the kids away from the animals, take a walk out to
the pumpkin patch. Have the kids pick out their Hallowe'en
pumpkin from the large selection of sizes. The Nichols' also
have a variety of gourds and cornstalks to help complete your
fall or Hallowe'en decorating.
"There
is no charge for the visit, it's just whatever you buy."
says Edith Nichols, who is also a Town Councillor for
Bracebridge.
The
farm is open from 10 am to 5 pm Fridays to Tuesdays each week,
(they are at the Farmer's Markets Wednesdays and Thursdays).
Take the 118 west off of Highway 11 at the Bracebridge turnoff
and follow it to the Santa's Village Rd. Turn left onto Santa's
Village Rd. and follow this to Nichols' Country Lane, at the big
bend in the road. Turn down Nichols Lane and follow it to the
farm.
After
the farm visit, try nearby Bracebridge for lunch. McDonalds, Tim
Horton's, Swiss Chalet/Harvey's and many other restaurants are
located in the town.
