Don’t
let their youth deceive you, for when it comes to strutting
their stuff on stage, Muskoka’s youngest actors are as
confident as any Broadway professional. And what they might
lack in experience, these kids more than make up for in
their sheer determination to have a good time when putting
on a show.
Never
has this been more apparent than in the Muskoka Theatre
for Young People’s new show, a romping re-make of the
classic fairytale, Sleeping beauty.
“Our
version of Sleeping
Beauty is very funny,” says MTYP founder Jeff
Shultis. “We’ve pulled together an excellent cast of
young actors aged 8 - 12 from across Muskoka for this show.
They've had a lot of fun rehearsing and learning their
roles.”
Almost
as much fun, in fact, as Shultis. A 35-year veteran of the
theatre business, Shultis came to Muskoka to direct the
popular Port Carling Dinner Theatre.
“I’d
had plenty of experience working with youth, so I decided to
set up the Muskoka Theatre for Young People to share that
experience with kids up here,” says Shultis. “It really
is a Muskoka affair, as the children come from all over. We
also get a lot of parents involved as part of the production
team.”
The
Muskoka Theatre for Young People is open to all children
between the ages 8 – 18 and, Shultis emphasizes, previous
acting experience isn’t necessary.
“We
simply want to encourage kids to get up on stage and have
fun,” he says.
