It seems apt that a place
formerly given over to rest and meditation should be living
out a new life as a Bed and Breakfast. The Monastery B&B
in Bracebridge was part of a monastery of the Society of Saint
John the Evangelist, an Anglican order of brothers, from 1928
to 1983. In 1988 the property was divided into 3 private
residences. This residence is the largest at 4,000 square
feet, and includes the bell tower, which still works. Situated
in a quiet neighbourhood perched along the north branch of the
Muskoka River where it winds though the town, the Monastery
B&B retains much of the calm repose of its former life.
Each of the two luxurious
suites in the home is named after one of the persons who
figured in the monastery’s history.
The Palmer Room, named
after Father R.F. Palmer, the original and principal Superior
of the Monastery, contains a queen-sized bed, walk-in closet
and large ensuite, 4-piece washroom. Large windows, a ceiling
fan and central air all add to the comfort of this spacious
room.
The Larkin Suite is named
after Gerald Larkin, heir of the Salada Tea firm. His estate
helped finance additions to the monastery in 1963, including
the bell tower and the stonework to match the chapel. A
two-bedroom suite with a private hall between the two rooms,
it has double beds and a large 4-piece washroom.
Enjoy a liberal breakfast
in either the formal dining room or the kitchen’s dining
room overlooking the ravine. Sip a specialty tea or coffee
while indulging in a hot breakfast, fresh baked goods,
cereals, yogurts, and seasonal fruits.
Downtown Bracebridge, with
its many boutiques and restaurants, is a 10-minute walk away.
The Wilson’s Falls hiking trail and the Bracebridge Bay
walking tour are also closeby. Boat cruises, summer theatre,
golf, local artisans, cross-country and downhill skiing and
many more trails are all nearby. Algonquin Park is only 45
minutes away.
