The focus of the Iroquois Artisans gallery is
SOAPSTONE/STEATITE SCULPTURE, images of tradition and
ceremony. Sculptors presented are BEN
HENRY, LOREENE HENRY, LEROY and CLIFTON HENRY, BENJAMIN THOMAS,
WILLY SKYE, LORI LAFORME, GARFIELD THOMAS and a
selection of other carvers.
Our
soapstone sculptures reflect the traditions and
perspective of the Haudenosaunee (The People Of The
Longhouse), The Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca
and Tuscarora.
RESIDENT
ARTISTS, MICHAEL ROBINSON, (acrylic, multimedia copper
etchings). Michael's work reflects the connection
between the Spiritual and Physical Worlds. The
haunting images of his native cultural traditions speak
strongly of his commitment to the environment and the
continuation of his people's beliefs.
PAM
TURNER WONG, (watercolour and giclee prints).
Pam's quiet Muskoka scapes express her sense of
wonder about the gifts of nature with which we are
blessed.
JOHN
DOHERTY, (ink and watercolour on wood and antler).
John's handcrafted wooden paddles, boxes, carved loons,
fish, and antler are decorated with bold imaginative
designs and combined with text of ancient peoples.
EDDIE LEPAGE, (acrylics and lithographs). Eddie portrays the
natural world in a distinct, unique style. His
wildlife images capture the beauty he observes in the
untamed world around us.
QUILL
BASKETS, BLACK ASH AND SWEETGRASS BASKETS AND
TRADITIONAL MOHAWK POTTERY.
Images
of the natural world are a celebration of the gifts of
Creation. It is believed we as human beings are
intended to fulfill a responsibility and a
role of balance, respect and harmony. We are not the
owners of the earth. Our survival is dependent upon the
natural world. It is our responsibility to protect
it. The responsibility never ends.
