Hunting in Muskoka by Doug Smith

Hunting and fishing were some of the main reasons for many tourists to come up to Muskoka in the early days. Sportsmen and women from all over North America and even some from Europe came to Muskoka to hunt the region's forests and enjoy the freshwater fishing. While the opportunities are not as
bountiful now as they were then there are still places in Muskoka which provide good hunting and fishing.

Game of different kinds, including moose, deer and bear, as well as smaller game -- ducks and ruffed grouse and hare -- are readily found throughout the region. The variety of terrain and the many hunt camps make for an exciting hunting experience.

Many of Muskoka's over 1,000 lakes and its numerous rivers boast sport fish of all kinds -- northern pike and muskie, walleye and bass, lake and speckled trout, as well as salmon on Georgian Bay. The region's many bait shops, fishing guides and marinas know where the best fishing is and know
how to outfit you for it. Whether you are just casting from the dock at a resort or paddling one of the local lakes or streams, or pursuing the bigger game on Georgian Bay or at a fly-in location you're sure to find something to satisfy your taste.

Looking at the predictions for the upcoming hunting season from an article by Bob Alison writing in Ontario Out of Doors magazine, Bracebridge, (representing the Muskoka region) has the following ratings: Moose -- good, Deer -- good, Bear -- excellent, Rabbit/Hare -- poor, but improving, Fox -- excellent, Squirrel -- good, Woodcock -- fair, Grouse -- good and improving, Geese -- poor, Ducks -- fair.

The local Ministry of Natural Resources office in Bracebridge has all the detailed information on local hunting and fishing regulations. Phone (705) 645-8747.
