Accommodations
Huckleberry Lodge offers an affordable island retreat on Georgian Bay by Kim Kerr

Georgian Bay is probably best known for its dramatic scenery… and it’s countless islands. Surprisingly, despite this plethora of islands – some consisting of acres of trees, others mere rocky outcrops – it can sometimes prove difficult for the vacationer to find affordable accommodation atop a Georgian Bay island.

But, with a little research, you can experience the island life without spending the earth. One   delightful, rustic island property worth considering is Huckleberry Lodge. This family run property offers a variety of private cabins and cottages, all with easy access to the water and with commanding views of Georgian Bay. The cabins are an interesting collection of colourful buildings perched atop the rocky shield and nestled amongst the island’s towering pine tress. And unlike some cabin-style resorts, there’s no problem recognizing which cabin is yours for the duration of your stay – they all look completely different.

Over in the Main Lodge, guests can enjoy some excellent cuisine in the Dining Room before taking time to relax in front of an open fire in the Lounge. The Dining Room is open to guests and the general public alike for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offers a wide variety of home cooked fare. And the prices won’t break the bank, either – you can get a slap up breakfast or lunch for just $8, and dinner will set you back no more than $23 (taxes are extra). For those feeling a little romantic, a special boat tour and dinner package is available (call for availability).

When you’re not eating, pull up a sun lounger or throw down a beach towel somewhere along the property’s more than 1,400 feet of fine sandy beaches. If your idea of relaxation involves a spot of fishing, you won’t be disappointed – Huckleberry Lodge boasts some of Ontario's best fishing, including all species of the major game fish found in the province.

If you’re looking for a slightly faster pace, sailing, surfing, canoeing, and hiking activities are also  available.
