by Sir Sandford Fleming College, (Haliburton Campus) this
year's conference will be held Friday, November 16th and
Saturday, November 17th at the Leslie M. Frost
Natural Resources Centre in Dorset.
Entitled
“Creating Educational Opportunities for the Tourism
Industry” this year's conference focuses on the role of
education in the tourism industry. Come and share two
exciting days with some of the profession's top players to
enhance your knowledge of the role that education plays in
enriching tourism experiences.
Keynote
speakers are
Brian Keating, who
heads up the Conservation Outreach Department at the Calgary
Zoological Society Botanical Gardens and Prehistoric Park; Todd
Lucier, a co-founder of
Northern Edge Algonquin - Retreat and Awareness Centre,
and John Veverka,
President and owner of John Veverka & Associates, and a
consultant with over 27 years of practical and academic
experience in Interpretive and Heritage Tourism Planning and
Training.
Brian Keating
is responsible for external conservation projects, sister
zoo relationships, public and media conservation related
presentations, and the eco-tour program. Using slides,
videos and personal experiences, Brian will provide a
passionate and exciting presentation about the importance of
educational experiences for visitors. (his website is

John
Veverka
is the author of the textbook Interpretive Master Planning
as well as having written over 70 articles and publications
on interpretation. John will be discussing heritage tourism
and ecotourism sites and the importance of interpretation at
these sites. His workshops will focus on innovations in
interpretation planning and critiquing tourism businesses'
brochures that market outdoor, natural and cultural

Todd
Lucier of
The Edge, is
part of a family owned and operated tourism business located
in an idyllic setting at the edge of Algonquin Provincial
Park in Ontario. Todd will share some of these successful
learning opportunities such as the Celtic Shamanism program,
the Running with the Wolves - for women only program, and
the Painting and Yoga program. (his website is

The
Keynote speakers are sponsored by the Haliburton Highlands
Chamber of Commerce, the Cambrian College of Applied Arts
& Techology, and the Haliburton Highlands Stewardship
Council.
As
well as the keynote speakers this year's conference has an
impressive line up of workshop leaders who will be looking
at the practical side of education and tourism. Workshop
topics include such things as 'What is an Educational
Vacation?'; 'How do we accurately and respectfully create
Aboriginal Learning Experiences?'; 'What is Adventure based
Education?', and more. So many questions and only two days
to begin to find the answers.
