There
aren’t too many B&Bs accessible by car, boat and
plane – floatplane, that is. But DunRovin
Bed and Breakfast between Bala and Port Carling is just such a place.
Located
on the north bay of Lake Muskoka, DunRovin is easily accessible by water and offers some
simply fantastic views of the Muskokan countryside. Owned and
operated by hosts Wilsie
and Bob Mann, the
picturesque Viceroy-style home is surrounded by exquisite wildflower gardens
and towering maple and beech trees (fall’s a wonderful time
to visit!).
From
the two well-appointed bedrooms to the common areas, Dunrovin
maintains a cottagey feel throughout. The Lake
Room features two twin beds with duvets, antique
furnishings, private bathroom and a scenic view of the lake.
The Garden Room has a romantic half-canopy queen bed decorated with silk
flowers, duvet and matching accessories, plus an en-suite
bathroom with shower.
After
a restful – and very quiet – night’s sleep comes
breakfast, a real treat at DunRovin. Everything’s home-baked
by Wilsie, from the tasty cranberry-blueberry pancakes to the
orange French toast, followed by sticky buns or heart-healthy
muffins. Best of all, breakfast can be had on the spacious
deck or screened gazebo in good weather.
Much
to see and do
There’s
a lot to see and do around the four-acre property. As well as
strolling around the beautiful wildflower gardens, guests can
relax in a hammock overlooking the water – a great place to
while away the time – and watch the wild ducks and herons on
the bay. Swimming is good in the protected bay with its sandy
bottom, and fishing, canoeing or paddleboating are available.
Watercraft enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Mann’s
replica mahogany Dispro (or Disappearing Propeller) boat, once
a common site on the lakes.
Open
year-round, a stay at Dunrovin costs from $100
- $125 (lower in winter), and reservations are
recommended as the summer season books up early.
