Vibrant colours and whimsical designs of Dotti Potts ceramics

The vibrant colours and whimsical designs of Dotti Potts ceramics immediately grab your attention. Simple serving dishes, platters and cups display bright blues, golds and greens, complete with simple fish, heart and cat motifs, and all with her signature dots as part of the pattern.

The creations of Sandra Silberman, these colourful ceramics are both functional and fun.

“I’ve always loved very bright, colourful artwork,” says Sandra, adding that the dots come from her enjoyment of incorporating a repeated, whimsical pattern on her pottery.

“My pieces are for every day use, so I want the whole piece to make a statement about the food,” she explains. “And I want my pieces to have an uplifting effect on people,” she states.

Though she took a pottery course by renowned potter Antony Shapiro in her native South Africa, and attended sculpture and print work classes at the Toronto School of Art, Sandra is mainly self-taught.

Sandra grew up in South Africa, and has lived in Ontario for the past nine years. She has been a professional ceramic artist for over ten years.

When she first came to Canada she mentions that she had toned down her work, thinking it was necessary for the Canadian market. “But I had to be true to myself, so I have gone back to the bolder colours,” she says. No one is disappointed.

A visit to the Dotti Potts studio/gallery in rural Muskoka, which she runs together with her husband Gavin, is a visual treat. On display is a large variety of her brightly coloured porcelain pottery, along with tiles for decoration or installation, as well as a selection of mirrors, coat racks, key racks, bulletin boards and more.

Dotti Potts exhibits annually at the One Of A Kind Spring and Christmas Shows in Toronto, and at the Muskoka Arts and Crafts Summer Show.
