If you call in your order to Don’s bakery the day before leaving to the cottage they will have it ready for pick-up when you arrive the next day. Just stop in at Don’s to grab your scones or Chelsea buns and then head to the cottage to enjoy fresh-baked goodies.

  Besides their famous scones and Chelsea buns, Don’s has a superb selection of baked goods, including cinnamon buns, butter tarts, pies, specialty breads, Kaisers, hamburger and hot dog buns, tea biscuits and more.  Don’s also does specialty cakes for all occasions.

  “We feature cranberry products, too, such as cranberry brie puffs, cranberry loaves, and cranberry muffins,” says owner Ross Davidson, explaining it is a natural considering Bala is the Cranberry capital of Ontario.

  Don's Bakery is one of the few remaining 'scratch bakeries', where all the ingredients of their products are weighed out, blended, and baked on the premises.

  “I have 4 other bakers right now, some from as far away as Newfoundland, and they are all ‘scratch’ bakers,” Davisdon explains.

  In operation since 1947, when founder Don Lloyd and wife Evelyn operated their bakery in the old J.W. Burgess Bakery on the corner of River Street and the Highway, present owners Ross and Allison Davidson purchased the business in 1979. They operated in the same location (beside Edward's Real Estate) until 1997, when the business moved up the highway to its present location. The Davidson's have expanded the operating season as well as their product selection.

Dons’ bakery operates 7 days a week during July and August, when they are open from 7:30 am to 6pm Mon to Sat. and 7:30am to 4pm Sundays. They are then open weekends  -- Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays -- up to the Cranberry Festival weekend, closing after that until the week when the Trek to Bethlehem is on in December, after which they close for the winter. They open again for the Easter weekend, then start each weekend again from Mother’s Day.
