Culligan Publishing Limited's president Tom Culligan,
started his publishing career with his first self-published
book, ‘Teacups and Sticky Buns’. It’s really his
Mom’s story, telling of her “powerful devotion in
raising nine children against the severest storms that life
could throw at her. A very Canadian story grounded in the
glorious landscape found along the North Shore of New
Brunswick's Baie de Chaleur, Canada.” As one reviewer put
it in the Evening News, “self-published…usually sends up
red flags, but in this case it is well worth the read.”
In addition, all (100%)
author and publisher profits of this book go directly to the
Margaret Culligan Foundation. A national charitable
foundation with the mandate to help feed and educate needy
and poor children, the Margaret Culligan Foundation was
established by Tom Culligan, in honour of his mother.
Tom
Culligan is co-founder of The Second Cup and was the first
to develop a chain of retail stores specializing in gourmet
coffee in North America. Tom created and developed the
Second Cup concept from a tiny 90-foot kiosk in 1975 to 150
stores across Canada (today there are over 500). In 1984,
when they had 48 stores, Tom purchased co-founder Frank
O'Dea's shares and then sold the entire chain in 1989 after
having opened 150 stores.
Tom
holds a degree in Theology and Philosophy from the
University of Dayton at Dayton, Ohio. Aside from his
interest in private financial and real estate developments,
Tom devotes himself full-time to painting and writing. He
divides his time between Muskoka, New Brunswick and Florida.
Future
releases from Culligan Publishing are scheduled for the fall
of 2004, with the release of the recipe book, ‘Teacups and
Sticky Buns, Mom's Recipes.’ It is a “full colour
illustrated Maritime storied cookbook, featuring sensational
'down-home' dishes such as; mussels and fish cakes on an
open fire, Christmas Eve tortière and fudge filled oatmeal
cookies, Kitchen square dancing and chicken bouillon,
Winter's micarièn fudge and taffy pulls, teatime anytime,
Mom's never fail pastry, donuts taste better with age,
serving up lunch for card parties and funerals, pitching-in
for an ol' time wedding feast and opening up the root
cellar.”
The
fall of 2005 will see another release, entitled
‘Teacups and Sticky Buns, Tom's Story;
How to make your dreams come true.’ In this book “Tom
shares and tells his experiences of how he developed his
idea into a successful concept, creating and developing one
of North America's most successful retail concepts, the
Second Cup Café chain of stores. And how he continues to
utilize these universal principles in painting, writing,
publishing and real estate development.”
Other
things to watch for include a PrideVision TV feature on Tom
Culligan this fall, and a Cottage Life Television
feature on author Tom Culligan's Muskoka cottage, family and
teacups. That is scheduled for March 2004.
