The Cottage Rose for holiday florals

Ask Cottage Rose owner James Woollett about the range of floral arrangements he works on at this time of year, and he sums it up as ‘very broad’.

Located in the town of Gravenhurst at the corner of Bay and the main street, the Cottage Rose Florist Shop is a busy place at Christmas time. “We’re making everything from doorpieces to mantelpieces to centerpieces, for homes and offices, from the economical to the extravagant,” James explains.

“Most of our work is custom done,” he adds, stating that, “we try to be distinctive and different, so have to be creative every time.”

“A mantelpiece, for example, might consist of a roping of various greens, such as eucalyptus and local greens such as pine and cedar and juniper. This is combined with pinecones and ribbons and can include candles, but it depends on the size of the mantle, of course,” James says.

“A wreath for the front door could be either grapevine wrapped with some greens or be made entirely from a selection of greens.”

“A centrepiece could follow the traditional red and white Christmas Ball colour theme, and include white, ‘ice-cap’ chrysanthemums with red carnations. It could also be made with perhaps as many as 7 or 8 different kinds of greens. Martha Stewart,” he notes, conscious of the influential trends, “did an all-white centerpiece on her show the other Sunday night.”

A 3rd generation florist, James is originally from Toronto, coming to Gravenhurst 3 years ago to open the Cottage Rose, because he wanted to be in Muskoka. He brings with him with over 35 years of personal experience as a florist.

If you want something custom made you’ll have to hurry, however, as James is usually booked by the week before Christmas. “But there are always lots of good choices of ready-made arrangements available, too”, he concludes.

The street address is 101 Muskoka Rd. S., Gravenhurst, at the corner of Muskoka Rd. S and Bay. Or call (705) 684-8932.
