Accommodations

Colonial Bay near Huntsville has everything needed for that great winter break By Kim Kerr

Now the white stuff’s here to stay, it’s time to start planning that winter Muskoka getaway. Whatever your particular pleasure, Muskoka in winter can (and does) deliver – whether you’re after a spot of skiing, some snowmobiling or simply kicking back at a luxurious spa, Muskoka’s got it all.

One popular place from which to base a Muskoka getaway is Colonial Bay, located just a few minutes drive northeast of Huntsville on Peninsula Lake. Although one of Muskoka's smaller vacation destinations (the property has a mix of studios and cottages, most with a lake view and gas fireplace), Colonial Bay has a lot to offer. Winter activities include everything from snowmobiling to Alpine skiing and snowshoeing.

Snowmobilers in particular will get a kick out of Colonial Bay. From the property's front door you'll have access to limitless miles of Ontario's best maintained and groomed trails. A trip around Algonquin Park can be accomplished in a day, and visits to Haliburton, North Bay or Parry Sound can all begin at Colonial Bay. Colonial Bay staff take snowmobiling seriously, donating their time to provide administration, trail maintenance and grooming for the Algonquin Snowmobile Club as well as the Muskoka Snowmobile Region.

Winter sports a-plenty

Skiers, too, will find much to do at Colonial Bay. Just five minutes away is Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Club, offering a variety of runs from novice to black diamond, as well as ski and snowboard rentals. Hidden Valley also has an experienced team of ski and snowboard instructors on hand, as well as some excellent night skiing.

Tubing fans, too, won’t be disappointed. Rock Ridge Tubing Park, located just 10 minutes away in Huntsville, offers a range of tubing runs, complete with a lift to get tubers back up the hill. Tubing (although without a lift) is also available at nearby Arrowhead Park.

Feeling up for a little shinny? Colonial Bay makes full use of its proximity to Peninsula Lake in all weather -- sunbathers lounge on the property's beach throughout the summer, and during winter months a part of the lake is cleared for skating.

Colonial Bay is also affordable. A standard unit with fireplace can be rented for just $69 a night midweek, or $150 for a Friday and Saturday. A weekly rate for the same unit is just $434.
