It began with a gathering of some 100 antique and
classic automobiles eleven years ago. Today, it attracts
more than 420 vehicles and entertains crowds of more than
4,500.
The Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce 11th Annual
Antique & Classic Car Show is set to run on Saturday, June
12, beginning at 8am to 4pm in Gull Lake Park.
“You could say that we’re really ‘revving’ up for our
11th annual Birthday Bash,” jokes Ann Curley,
executive director of the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce.
“Hot rods, convertibles, coupes and muscle cars will be on
display. All the names you know and maybe some you have
forgotten!”
Everything old is new again as the show will feature rebuilt
and repainted antique and classic vehicles.
“This is a hobby that has seen, and will see continued
growth,” Curley said. “The appeal? It takes us back to our
youth, when times were perceived as simpler and cars more
glamourous.”
While the antique and classic show is a hobby for car owners,
the show is well attended by those who just love old cars.
“This is an ageless show. You should see the look on the
faces of some of the youngsters who walk through! We market it
as a family show and try to include activities that are fun
for the whole family. Grandparents love to boast that ‘those
were the days’, Dad and Mum like to reminisce about their
first car, and the kids love to look.”
Of course, there is a no touching, no bike rule to the show.
“As organizers, we do ask that kids walk their bikes through
the park. Some of the car owners have spent thousands of
dollars restoring the cars to their former glory, and it takes
just one bike accident to virtually destroy the paint job or
detailing,” Curley said, adding that most paint work is
custom done on the vehicles.
What is the attraction of a car show?
“That’s’ easy! The car owners want to show off their
beauty!” Curley said. “Actually, sharing stories of where
the car was found, the history and the condition of the
vehicle with fellow hobbyists is just the best for many of our
visitors. Some of these vehicles have wonderful stories
attached to them.”
In addition to some great vehicles on display, the 11th
Annual Antique and Classic Car Show also features swimming at
the public beach in Gull Lake, music, draws, prizes, and great
food.
Value Cover Races are being hosted at the show by the Back
Alley Cruisers. Organizers of the races will supply a few
covers for those who are not able to come with their own.
Bob Goodwin, a local spokesperson, said that families,
especially children, are encouraged to participate. “It’s
a great family and spectator event.”
Curley said that none of this would be possible without the
support of the local businesses, community groups and
corporate sponsors.
“A heartfelt thank you to our local Chamber members who
support the car show with dash plaques, trophy and T-shirt
sponsorships, and donations to cover our musical entertainment
and prizes. None of this would happen without our members”
“All are welcome to attend Muskoka’s largest drive-in,”
Curley said with a smile.
