Deerhurst hosts 23rd annual Bluegrass music awardss by Kim Kerr

Things are gonna get a little hot around Deerhurst Resort the weekend of November 23 – 25. That’s when the organizer’s of the 23rd Annual Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards bring the sounds of southern USA to Muskoka, luring fans of this increasingly popular musical style from across the country.

“The awards provide a chance for us to honour our very best Bluegrass musicians,” says event organizer Tony DeBoer. “These are the kind of folks that really put a bit of class into their music.”

For those unfamiliar with Bluegrass, DeBoer suggests a quick primer would be the recent chart-topping CD, the soundtrack to the movie O Brother Where Art Thou? Of particular note, he says, was the smash single I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow by the Soggy Bottom Boys.

“That CD and the excellent performers on it have done wonders for the Bluegrass cause,” says DeBoer. “It’s put Bluegrass on the map.”

Fans and Bluegrass-newbies alike couldn’t do any better than visit Deerhurst during the Awards weekend. DeBoer and his compatriots have pulled together a stellar line-up of musicians for the event from across North America. Headliners IIIrd Time Out will be travelling up from Georgia, and Canada’s own Hard Ryde and Northern Sons will entertain the crowds with their own unique sound.

Tickets are $50 for the for the three day event, which includes access to all performances as well as to special workshops and the 2002 Canadian Bluegrass Challenge. A variety of vendors selling Bluegrass music and fashions will also be onsite. For those wanting to make a weekend break of it, Deerhurst has provided a variety of accommodation packages for attendees, with room rates starting at $118.

To make a reservation or for more information, contact Tony DeBoer at 705-758-9049 (weekends) or 905-634-3988 (weekdays). Alternatively, visit the website at www.northernbluegrass.com
