Amateur artists can capture Muskoka wilderness and wildlife thanks to unique new tour packages by Kim Kerr

Arts in the Wild,
a new alliance of Ontario-based art organizations and tourism operators, presents visitors to Muskoka and the surrounding area with a unique opportunity to combine a passion for the outdoors with their love of the arts.

With more than 60 different get-a-way packages on offer -- many of them based in Muskoka and Algonquin Park -- art and nature enthusiasts can touch up on their watercolour painting skills, photography or sculpting.

You'll work with skilled guides and professional teachers at northern lodges, art academies, parks, galleries, cultural sites and lakeside resorts, even in the wilderness.

An example of a popular photography program is Shooting Algonquin, hosted by Windsong Adventures. This unique wilderness photography adventure, taking place from July 5 - 8, is a lodge-based experience close to the northwest corner of Algonquin Provincial Park. The theme is “photojournalism” -- learning to tell a story with your images. The $525 cost includes three night’s accommodation at the Algonquin Log Cabin (double occupancy), all meals, instruction, wilderness equipment and the services of a guide.

Other available packages range from one to seven days, and are tailored the specific interests of outdoor and art enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.

To participate in this unique program, visit the website at www.artsinthewild.com and look for the activity that most interests you. You’ll find a variety of links to participating guides and teachers -- simply visit the linked pages, and call or e-mail the artist you're interested in working with.

Accommodation varies depending on the program you choose. You might find yourself staying at a lakeside cabin, a wilderness campsite or, if it's an indoor program, you could end up staying at a luxurious resort. Meals are usually provided as part of the Arts in the Wild program you choose.

While some programs are on offer year round, the majority take place during the summer months. However, new fall, winter and spring programs are coming on line all the time, so be sure to check for availability.
